I love the Olympics.
I’m not a huge organized sports person, to be honest. Baseball has run its course. I haven’t had enough exposure to soccer to get fired up about it. The NFL is more spectacle and less actual sport. Basketball has been a non-event for me since high school. Boxing and MMA are mostly spectacle than substance. I only really watch hockey; NHL and PWHL. But neither get me super fired up to the point I can’t walk away from the television for an extended period. The Olympics fills that void in my soul for competitive anything.
My past ten days have been curling, hockey, biathlon, speed skating wishing I could be sipping a coffee in Cortina, reading a doorstop of a book on world history, learning Swedish, and doing more editing than writing. Work has been an afterthought. It’s been wonderful.
The whole temporal anxiety thing I’ve had the luxury of experiencing for the past month or so is settling down. I know a million people preach “mindfulness” as a way to get past the general anxiety of human self-awareness, but hardly any of them define mindfulness in any meaningful way. At least not for me. So, it’s been a bit of a bitch.
I feel I’m in a good place, though. More patient. Less tense. Early- to mid-spring is usually the worst part of my year, so we’ll see how March and April shake out.
I’m still plugging away at this fantasy trilogy. I’m glad I decided to write all three before even thinking about publishing, because I don’t feel locked into every sentence. It’s easier to make adjustments and fart around with foreshadowing. The only drawback is that page count is getting BIG. To the point that I’m wondering if Book 3 is going to need to be two volumes. My editor is pretty amazing, though. She has a good eye for where I can trim.
Anyway, that’s it. That’s the blog. Pretty mundane month. In an electronic society where everything needs to be interesting for the sake of audience/customer service/making money, mundane and boring are more my speed.
I’ll talk about a book or something next time.
